Over the years, we have seen how one production technology replaces another. The displays of computers and mobile devices are constantly being improved. Let’s take a closer look at the technologies used to manufacture e-book screens – E-Ink.
E Ink tablet – what is it, and how did it appear?
Modern technologies allow you not to buy expensive software for installation on a computer; you can deploy infrastructure and have access to it from anywhere, from any equipment connected to the Internet. It should be noted that thousands of people with access rights can have access to the display at the same time. The convenience and universality of access are ensured by the wide availability of services and support for various types of terminal devices (personal computers, mobile phones, Internet tablets).
Owners of modern readers carefully study everything related to the functionality of devices: acceptable e-book formats, built-in applications, the breadth of possibilities, and other characteristics. Those who are just thinking about purchasing a reader first pay attention to the technical parameters of the gadget and only then move on to the features of the “stuffing” of each model. The most popular questions remain regarding the uniqueness of the display: does it really look like ordinary paper, does it not harm eyesight like liquid crystal screens, and does it clearly convey each character in the text?
E-Ink – electronic ink or electronic paper. Screens based on this technology are called paper-like. This technology was created specifically to simulate conventional printing on a paper sheet. The technology is based on microcapsules filled with black and white micro granules. When an electric field is applied to such a capsule, black or white granules (depending on the polarity of the applied voltage) float to its surface, providing a change in the color of the capsule.
The principle of operation, pros, and cons of E Link display technology
Paper books are gradually giving way to new technical solutions – smartphones, tablets, and readers. At the same time, the latter confidently turn into market leaders because they are able to offer what others are not yet capable of. It is about a special technology on the basis of which they are created. It is she who makes new devices comfortable and safe for the eyes. What exactly does it consist of? What are the features of “readers”?
The principle of operation of the electronic ink display is simple. This imaging device works as follows: the active layer of the screen contains miniature transparent capsules with black and white particles (pigment). Black and white particles react differently to the appearance of an electrical potential: positively charged white particles are attracted to negatively charged electrodes, and negatively charged black particles are attracted to positively charged contacts.
Like all devices, E-ink displays have both advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of “liquid ink technology” include the following:
- no glow and flickering of the display;
- the e-ink display is characterized by negligible power consumption, consumes it only at the moment of changing (generation) of the image;
- when the electric field is removed, the microcapsules remain stained, retaining the generated image.
The disadvantages of E Ink tablet are:
- the absence of white “white” color – it is, as you understand, a little grayish;
- high static – updating images on such displays is much slower compared to the same TFT displays, which makes it impossible, for example, to view dynamic content.
Latest News about E Ink Technology
E Ink Display Technology has been a game-changer in the world of electronic displays, and there are some exciting developments in this field. One of the latest news is the partnership between E Ink and TCL CSOT to develop a new e-paper display module. This new module will use E Ink’s latest flexible Carta 1100 e-paper technology, which offers a high resolution and faster refresh rates. The new module will be used in e-readers, smart homes, and IoT applications.
Another exciting development in E Ink technology is the introduction of a new flexible, low-power color display technology called Kaleido Plus. This technology features a higher resolution and a wider color gamut than previous E Ink displays, making it ideal for use in a wide range of applications. With these advancements, E Ink technology continues to push the boundaries of what is possible with electronic displays, offering new possibilities for e-readers, smart homes, IoT, and other applications.
